Information for Judges
EKRSF owes its success to its volunteers. We are especially grateful to our amazing judges for lending their time and giving valuable feedback to our students, who consistently cite their conversations with judges as the highlight of their EKRSF experience.
Although each judge submits their own evaluations, they work in teams of 2 – 3 based on their common area of expertise. Judging at EKRSF is a great way to meet other STEM enthusiasts or do something fun with a friend or colleague!
We look forward to catching up with returning judges and welcoming new ones. No prior judging experience is necessary, but prospective judges should:
hold at least an undergraduate degree in STEM and/or be currently employed in a STEM field
be comfortable interacting with Grade 6 – 12 students
Every year, science fairs offer thousands of students in BC the opportunity to develop original scientific research, innovative projects and 21st Century learning skills. Students who develop science fair projects enjoy project-based learning that extends science beyond the classroom and encourages curiosity about topics of personal interest. The finalists of our provincial/territorial science fairs receive awards, scholarships and recognition for their achievements. Finalist status is also a prerequisite for competition at the Canada Wide Science Fair.
The East Kootenay Regional Science Fair (EKRSF) will take place on Friday April 11th at The College of the Rockies gymnasium, and we need judges to judge the Grade 6 – 12 science projects this year. Judging is the highlight of the science fair experience for many students. Students love the opportunity to exchange ideas with specialists in their field. In return, most judges find talking with science fair participants to be a very positive experience. The energy, enthusiasm and inspiration students bring to their projects is contagious.
The format of this year’s fair will be in-person projects and the judging process involves interviewing the students, asking questions, assigning scores to projects following a given rubric (link below), and documenting feedback.
